Creatine for Women: What the Science Actually Says
Despite lingering myths, creatine is one of the most beneficial supplements for women. We break down the research and explain why it deserves a place in your routine.

I get asked about creatine almost every day. Usually it goes something like: "Won't it make me bulky?" or "Isn't that just for bodybuilders?" The short answer to both is no. The longer answer is that creatine is one of the most studied, safest, and most beneficial supplements available, and women have arguably more to gain from it than men.
What creatine actually does
Creatine helps your muscles produce energy during short, intense efforts, lifting weights, sprinting, anything that requires power. Your body makes a small amount on its own, and you get a little from meat and fish. Supplementing simply tops up your stores so your muscles can work harder, recover faster, and adapt better.
Why it matters more for women
Women naturally have lower creatine stores than men, around 70-80% as much. That means the relative benefit of supplementing is often greater. Research shows creatine supports:
- Strength and lean muscle gains during resistance training
- Better recovery between training sessions
- Improved cognitive function, particularly during sleep deprivation or stress
- Bone density support, especially valuable around perimenopause
- Mood regulation in some studies of women with depressive symptoms
What about bloating and weight gain?
This is the myth that won't die. Creatine pulls water into your muscle cells, not under your skin. The result is fuller-looking muscles, not a puffy face. Most women see a 1-2kg increase on the scale in the first couple of weeks; that's intramuscular water, and it's a good thing. It's a sign it's working.
Creatine doesn't make you bulky. Lifting heavy and eating in a calorie surplus over years makes you bulky, and even then it's hard.
How to take it
5 grams per day. Any time of day. With or without food. That's it. No loading phase needed, no cycling required. Consistency over months is what matters. Stick with pure monohydrate, every fancy form is more expensive and no more effective.
